Labor Day Weekend

Well gang, the end of summer is nigh. At least it looks to be a nice weekend to wrap up summer.

Bass fishing has been steady, if a bit slow at times. Fish are using the weedlines in 12-18 feet of water, as well as the piers and the slop. Shallow fish can be taken on jigworms, skirted grubs, tubes or jig/chunk combos. Deeper fish are being taken on crankbaits and by flipping the weededges. The morning and evening is producing a topwater bite, especially over shallow flats with scattered weeds. Nightcralwers on a split shot or slip sinker rigs are catching some fish in the weeds as well. Okauchee, Golden, Nagawicka, Pine and Kessus have been the most consistent, but bass can be caught on any area lake.

Walleye fishing has been good, but much better in the low light hours. Small jigs with live bait, or lindy rigs have been the best producers. A few fish are still being caught on spinner harness/bottom bouncer combos while trolling. Evening hours is the time to be fishing minnow baits around weeds. Pine, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Fox, Lac Labelle and Lake Koshkonong have all been giving up walleyes.

Northern Pike are still biting in the shallows. Buzz, spinner and swimbaits are catching these fish. Larger fish are still using the weedlines and are moving onto some deeper rocks and can be targeted with larger chubs, shiners or small suckers on a slip sinker rig. Vertically jigging structure in 22-28 feet with a jig/repear tail combo has caught a few fish in the last ten days. Try Okauchee, Golden, Pine, Delevan, Fowler, Lake Koshkonong and Moose Lake for pike.

Musky fishing remains the realm of the trollers. Pulling deep diving crankbaits continues to produce throughout the day, but there's definitely a better bite in the late afternoon/early evening hours. Topwaters have still been catching a few fish, especiallyin the morning. Okauchee, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Lac Labelle, Fox, and Fowler are all producing to one degree or another right now.

Good Luck and be safe this weekend when on the water.
Cheers

Monday Update 8-25-08

First, a couple of notes.

1.) Our Canada Trip dates are changing. We have the opportunity to get on a better lake and more information will be coming as soon as finalize the deal with the outfitter.

2.)This is the last Tuesday for Big Bass League this Season.

-------
Fishing Report

The cooler nights are changing the water conditions. Fish are starting to feed mid-morning and the late afternoon.

Bass are still being caught in the same locations as last week, but look for them to start using rocky areas heavily over the next 30 days. Small crawfish colored crankbaits can be the best bait in your box.

Walleye are deep. Yesterday I was marking schools of them in 28-32 feet of water, although the fish that were biting (although lightly) were in 22-25 feet. I would stick to lindy rigs or split shot setups with large live bait for the time being.

Northern Pike are beginning to patrol the shallow flats and weedlines. Its still early, but lipless cranbaits and jerkbaits can really produce during the next seasonal phase.

Musky are still being caught by trollers, but some are still take on topwaters ear weededges and weedy points, although this bite is slowing down.

Good Luck,
CT

Weekend Update 8-21-2008

Hey Gang,

Labor Day is right around the corner. You've certainly noticed the days getting shorter. Its getting on towards Fall.

Fishing gets pretty good this time of year. The chief obstacle is often the weather. As Fall approaches, unstable weather can set in quick. That certainly looks to be the case this weekend.

--------------------------------------------------

As for right now, things have been fairly stable. The best bite seems to be moving from the early morning to late morning and early evening.

--------------------------------------------------

LM and SM Bass have begun moving into staging positions. Lots of fish are being taken off the edges of deep weeds, but fish have also been coming from the mid depth flats and shallow rocks. Start with topwater baits in the morning, then move to wacky worms, tubes and jigworms as the bite dies down. If you're fishing deeper, stick with live bait on a split shot and/or slip-sinker rigs or texas rigged plastics. If the bite is extra tough, try a shallow diving shad (white) colored crank around the rocks.

Walleye have been deeper this season than ususal. I've not been able to figure out why, but the active fish are still hanging in 18-25 feet of water. Look for sandgrass with baitfish holding nearby and you'll be in them pretty quick on Lac Labelle, Pine or Oconomowoc. If you want to make the trip, the bite on the Koshkonong is still happening. Either way, pulling bouncers with spinner harnesses, crankbaits or slip bobbering with live bait has been productive.

After a slow start, Northern Pike fishing has been more consistent this season than I've seen in many years. As fall sets in, the deeper fish will move to the weedlines. This is a great time to target them with spoons, small bucktails, or crankbaits. It may be a little early yet, but don't be afraid to start trying these techniques over the next 20 days or so. In the meantime you can still target smaller pike in the shallows with spinner or buzzbaits and larger fish with suckers, chubs or shiners along the deep edges of weedy points.

Panfish are still being caught deep, but look for them to move into mid-depth water over the next few weeks. For now, tightlight vertically with splitshot or slip bobber them off deep weeds and sand with live bait.

Musky fishing is set to get good. Reports indicate that topwaters are still catching a few fish ealry and late, but the majority of fish are being caught off the deepest weeds on crankbaits, soft plastics and jerkbaits.

I'll be out this weekend, and I'll make sure to bring a first hand report on conditions to you early next week.

Musky Mikes Fly-in Canada Trip

After some requests by guide clients and store customers, we have begun to put together a Canadian Fly-In Fishing Trip for August of 2009.

I will lead a small group on a week long trip out of Red Lake, Ontario. We will fish a lake for Northern Pike and Walleye for a week starting on August 7th, 2009. I'll be arranging the food, beer, bait and tackle for the trip and each angler will get a personalized St Croix Jigging Rod as part of the package.

This is a great trip. I've been out with the outfitter several times and we've caught lots of fish at each of the lakes we've gone to. We'll be the only group on the lake (there's no other cabins). The scenery and wildlife are magnificent.

I'll be posting more information soon, but if you are interested, email me.

Fishing Report 8-18-08

Its getting on towards the end of summer, and things are sure to pick up quickly. Expect things to get great over the next 20-30 days, especially if the weather stays stable.

Look for bass in the shallow water around piers and slop. Some fish are relating to rockbars in 5-12 feet of water. Tube baits are a great way to target these fish. Okauchee, Oconomowoc, Pine, Lac Labelle and Moose have all had active bites around rocky areas. Some fish are still being taken off the weedlines and off the weed flats by anglers flipping around heavy cover. Okauchee, Golden and Nagawicka especially.

Walleye are starting to transition to fall locations. A few fish are appearing on midlake structure but many are staging off mainlake points, especially where there is bottom transitions from rock to sand or from sand to muck. Trolling with bottom bouncers and spinner harnesses or drifting with live bait rigs are great ways to target these fish. Lake Koshkonong, Lac Labelle, and Pine lake have all been consistent producers.

Northern pike fishing continues to be hot as it has been most of the year. Numerous smaller fish can still be caught throwing spinner or buzzbaits around scattered shallow cover on the flats, especially in the morning. Bigger fish are being caught off deep weeds and sandgrass flats on slip sinker rigs. Chubs and shiners have been the better bait options, but don't overlook deep diving crankbaits this time of year. A white shad or natural looking bluegill pattern can really catch them as we begin to move into early fall. Try Moose, Golden or even Garvin Lake if you can access it through the channel.

Musky fishing has been slower the last ten days, but fish are still being caught early in the morning on topwater baits. Fish shallow structure adjacent to deep water as early as you can get out in the morning. By 9am, move out deep and troll for them.

The panfish remain active in the evening hours. Look for them at the end of points about an hour before to a hour or two after dark. If fishing during the day, your keeping size bluegills and crappie will come off deep weeds. We were catching some nice ones last week off a patch of weeds/sandgrass in 27 feet of water. Leeches or panfish plumpers on a tightline-vertical fished split shot rig has been working great, especially for the deeper fish.

Good Luck,
CT

Red-Hot-Bite!

Hey gang,

Just a quickie for you. There's a dynamite trolling bite happening right now on Lake Koshkonong. I hit it today, and didn't even make it out onto the lake until the fog lifted at 9:30 but still caught plenty of fish.

Fished two areas, got more than a dozen walleyes, the biggest was better than 6lbs. Dozens of whitebass and even a few bonus catfish.

Longline trolling #11 and #13 floating rapalas was the key. Orange, Chartruese and silver and firetiger all produced trolling in 4-6 feet of water of the ends of mainlake points between 2.2-3.2 mph.

I also tried some bottom bouncer/spinner harnesses but I kept getting bit of by northerns so I went straight to the crankbaits.

Email me if you want more information.

Lake reports

I had an email request for a lake by lake breakdown for this weeks report. Here's the latest.

* Ashippun Lake: Panfish good. Bluegills in deeper water and along weedlines. Bass fair on live bait and plastics.

* Okauchee Lake: Bass fishing has been slow but steady. Fish in shallow water have been more active, larger fish are being taken by flipping weedclumps on the flats. Musky Fishing has been good, with the majority of fish being taken while trolling the deeper water or on topwaters in low light conditions.

* Oconomowoc Lake: Walleye fishing has been hot. Fish 18-25 feet of water with live bait, or pull bottom bouncers with spinner rigs. Musky fishing slow, but steady. Focus on deep weeds. Bass fishing has been decent, but most fish are being caught early and late in the day.

* Golden Lake: panfish has been red hot. Fish 16-22 feet of water, or look for gill suspending out over deeper water. bas fishing has been good early, but the bite drops off around 10am. Pike has been average for Golden.

* Silver Lake: panfish have been active, focus on deep weeds in 18-26 feet. Bass action is fast, but the bite drops off in the middle part of day for a few hours. A few walleyes are being caught on lindy rigs while drifting deeper water.

* Lac La Belle: Walleye fishing has been steady, but the fish are staying deeper this year. Focus efforts along the breaks in 12-18 feet early in the day, but move out as deep as thirty feet if you can't find fish.

* Nagawicka Lake: Panfish has been slow, but a few nicer ones are being caught by people drifting with live bait in the evenings. bass has been good in the slop and around piers, with some additional fish being caught with soft jerkbaits. Pike fishing has been steady, especially along the weedlines along the west end.

* Pine Lake: bas and walleye have been good. Bass are being taken fishing plastics along the weedlines while walleyes are coming on bottom bouncer/spinner harnesses trolled slowly in 22-28 feet. Night-time trolling with crankbaits has also been producing some quality fish.

* Pewaukee Lake: Musky fishing has been slow the last two weeks as the boat traffic has picked up.

* Lake Koshkonong: trollers doing excellent on whitebass and walleyes pulling floating minnow baits in 4-6 feet of water. A few northerns and catfish are also being caught.

* Lake Kessus: Bluegill fishing has been slow. Bas are in the slop and around piers. Pike are being caught off the ends of the points adjacent to deeper water.

Good Luck

Weekend Fishing

Well gang, we are in that part of summer. The part where the days are nice, but the fishing can be tough.

Fronts and bluebird skies can make for some challenging fishing. But just slow down and you can connect.

Shallow water Bass have been active early in the morning and in the early evening. Topwaters like poppers, spooks and jointed minnow baits are catching fish as is skirted grubs, shakey head, wacky worms and pre-rigged worms. As the sun comes up the fish are sticking to the piers, slop and weedlines. Wacky worms, tubes or jig/chunk trailers are catching fish around piers, while texas rigged plastics, crankbaits or slow rolled spinnerbaits are catching fish off the weedlines.

Some nice bags of panfish are being caught by anglers targeting the schools in deeper water. Drifting with live bait on split shot rigs is producing duing the day. Fish have been anyhwer from 14-28 feet deep. In the evening, look for the schools at the end of long points in 10-15 feet of water. Panfish plumpers, leeches and plastics tipped with waxworms are catching fish.

Northern Pike fishing remains consistent. Smaller fish can be caught in shallow weedy areas on spinners, buzzbaits or lipless crankbaits. Larger fish are being caught trolling crankbaits or spoons,or on with live bait on slip sinker rigs.

Walleye have been taken by trollers, especially in the evening hours. Minnow baits and spinner harnesses behind bottom bouncers have been productive. Most anglers have been successful fishing near sandgrass in 18-28 feet of water.

I'll be at the shop Saturday Morning. Stop in and say hi!

Fishing Report 8-04-08

Well gang, by all reports, it was a productive weekend for many anglers.

Bass fishing has remained consistent. There's a great early bite happening on most lakes up until about 9:30am. The fish are then moving into the weeds, under piers or into the slop. They can be targeted around overhanging cover or weededges adjacent to deeper water. The bite is picking up again around 1:30 and remains fairly consistent until dark. Fish are being taken in shallow water on wacky worms, (green pumpkin has been hot) tubes, skirted grubs and shakey head worms. Deeper fish are coming on jigworms, texas rigged plastics or jigs with a craw or chunk trailer. Live bait, chubs, leeches or crawlers on a slip sinker or lindy rig has also been effective.

Northern pike continue to bite. Shallow fish are still being caught on spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and lipless crankbaits around shallow weed clumps on the flats. Deeper fish are being taken using live bait, chubs and/or shiners, long lined on slip-sinker rigs. Trolling deep-diving crankbaits in natural patterns like the rapala DT series around the weededges has also been producing some fish.

Musky fishing has remained slow, but very steady. Most fish are being caught while trolling, but a few are still coming on topwater during low light periods, especially very early in the morning. Look for them around deep water structure, especially the deep end of long points.

Good Luck Out There.
