Musky fishing was good on Saturday last week. Other than the 49" and 50" Steve got a hold of a nice 48".

OKAUCHEE LAKE - Water tem low 50s.

Musky fishing in high gear a 49" and 50" boated on Saturday using Musky Mikes suckers. Both brought up using Super-ds. Stop in the shop for great prices on Super-ds while they last.

Perch are hitting rosie reds in 15' holes.

OCONOMOWOC LAKE - Nice size small mouth bass being taken using small suckers.
Muskys are moving with one 44" boated and another large brought up.

Musky Mikes Bait and Tackle in Okauchee together with Chris Terry will be collecting used fishing equipment to donate to the Wisconsin DNR's fishing equipment loan program. Bring your used but functional rods, reels and tackle to the shop.

Make a donation and get $5 off any purchase or special order of St Croix, Pflueger, or Okuma.

We are looking for the basics like old tackle boxes, spinning and spincast rod/reel combos, hooks, sinkers and bobbers. Make a youngster's day.

Rods and reels that are donated will be cleaned and fresh line will be spooled. Donated tackle will be divided into tackle boxes that provide the necessary items for a day of fishing.

You're likely to notice some changes in these parts real soon, most notably is that I'll be turning this blog over to the shop for their use. I'll still drop by from time to time, but Greg and Kathy are going to take over.

Holiday Weekend Update

Ice Fishing is now in full swing on area lakes. Ice depths vary greatly, and some of the mainlake areas over deeper water still have thin ice, especially on the larger lakes. Always exercise caution. Anglers are reporting between 4-10 inches in the bays and protected areas.

Panfish are biting on a variety of plastics, live bait and jig combos. Look for green weeds between 4 and 12 feet of water. Bluegills will likely be nearby, and can be taken on jigging rods throughout the day, but expect action to go through cycles as the fish turn on and off.

Crappies are relating to current areas, or areas with scattered bottom cover adjacent to current. A teardrop jig with a tail hooked small fathead is always a solid bet for crappies, but don't over look a very small red hook tipped with a wiggler, waxworm or spike, and remember, crappies feed up, so keep your presentation just above them when possible.

Pike are biting in full swing. Tipups with live bait or smelt are the biggest producers, and most of the fish are coming at/ or near the mouths of bays and backwaters. Lots of smaller pike are being caught, but a few are starting to come in over 35 inches. Large live bait, either medium suckers, large shiners or smelt are producing the bigger fish. If you just want some action, smaller pike in the 20-25 inch range are actively biting on medium shiners, especially over the roadbed or gravel drop off areas.

Well gang, winter's here, and with it, the ongoing requests for ice conditions.

First off: Never assume the ice is safe, always take precautions, and use common sense when heading out. Take it from me, going through is not fun.

Most of the smaller lakes, and the shallow protected bays on the larger lakes have between 2-4 inches, but deeper water and heavy current areas are still open. People have been heading out to the early ice spots, but I'd still wait till the next cold snap pulls through before I'd wander too far, especially near deeper water.

Anglers are starting to catch a few pike on tips with live bait. Crappies have been active a couple times a day, especially near current or springs.

Be careful if you're heading out. Use the buddy system, spud your way out, and even consider a PFD. Things should stabilize in the next two weeks.

Hey,

Just a quick update on conditions. Several area lakes are starting to form skim ice, especially in protected shallow areas, but the ice is by no means safe for walking on or fishing yet. Several anglers are still fishing for Musky in the open water areas.

The bigger fish are starting to be caught. The last ten days has seen 50+ inch fish from Okauchee, Garvin and Pewaukee.

I know things have been a little on the slow side with reports, and for that, I apologize. Keep checking in, and we'll keep you up to date with ice conditions.

The cold cometh....

There's been some better than average musky action occurring on our local lakes, but if you look at the fishing reports, the fish that are being caught are high 30s to mid 40 inch fish.

Fun, for sure, but as I was looking through fish pictures this week, I noticed that I hadn't seen many fish over 45 come in this fall. I think, though I don't know for sure obviously, the warmer weather has kept some of the larger fish from putting on the feedbag. But the the weather is set to start cooling off in dramatic fashion, that's sure to ring the dinner bell.

Musky Season: Some things for your attention

First off: Musky Mikes is running a picture contest this fall. Catch a musky, and take a picture (then make sure to release the fish).

Bring the picture to the shop. At the end of the season, we'll have a vote. The best picture will win a prize package.

Note: The best picture wins, not necessarily the picture of the biggest fish.

GRAND PRIZE $3000

Tournament Entry Fee: $125 Per Team

Registration form is (here.)

Live bait and trolling will be allowed
Three lines per boat/team.
A team is considered one or two anglers who are fishing from the same boat. No more than two anglers per boat.
Field is limited to 50-boats or 100 people max. Anglers preferring to fish alone would need to pay full entry fee of $125.00.
Tournament hours are Saturday 6 am to 4 pm, once you are checked in, you can fish beginning at 6 am.
Only live-released muskies 34" or longer can be entered
Payouts: 1st Prize- $3000, 2nd Prize $1000, 3rd Prize - $750, 4th prize - $500, 5th Prize - $250. Payout is based on full field of 50 teams. If the tournament does not fill, payouts will remain proportionally the same.
Big Fish Pool possible $1000 payout based on $10 Entrance Fee.
