Crappies turning back on....

The bad weather is clearing out...lots of guys heading out to the lakes for crappies right now.

Best baits are the obvious ones. For minnows, stick with fatheads and rosie reds, but don't forget the wax worms for finicky biters. I like to use a small octopus or aberdeen style hook in red or gold.

1/16-1/32 ounce jigs with a twister tail or a fuzzy grub body will almost always produce a few bites, as will a traditional hair jig. Best colors (in my opinion) are white and pink or white and orange in clear water, or a black and chartruese in stained water.

If you are heading out two areas to focus your attention:

1.) Shallow bays that have a north facing shoreline. You improve your chances if there's sand or muck bottoms with some green weeds in the area. Textbook bays of this type would be Icehouse, Whitakers or Stumpy Bay.

2.)Channels. Dark bottom boat channels also concentrate crappies this time of year. This should be a good year with the water as high as it is. Nagawicka, Pewaukee and Labelle all have good boat channels.

As always, Eric and I can point you in the right direction, drop by the shop or shoot us a call.

Good luck out there.
