Potentially toxic algae closes beach
The beach at Lakefront Park in the Village of Pewaukee has been closed until further notice because potentially toxic blue-green algae has been found in the water, officials said.
The Pewaukee Lake beach along W. Wisconsin Ave. was flooded after heavy rains this month.
The blue-green algae was detected yesterday, according to the Pewaukee Park and Recreation Department.
Toxins released by blue-green algae are potentially deadly to people and pets. Symptoms include rash, hives, runny nose, irritated eyes and throat irritation, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
